I just…never really got into it.
In terms of storytelling, it’s closer to a Miracle Day type of story than series 1 or 2 (or even 3) Torchwood. But the plot didn’t always make sense to me. I sometimes felt like the characters should have connected the dots sooner than they did. And I’m not sure all is fully explained by the end.
In terms of characters, while I appreciate them bringing lots of old Torchwood characters in, many of them are sidelined pretty quickly (Gwen) or do not really serve any real purpose in the story (Rex). The new characters – the crew of the Ice Maiden – are quite likeable. As this is more of an adventure story than a character story (at least to me), they’re the characters you learn the most about in the book as they’re new. The authors know the regular Torchwood characters (obviously Jack is spot-on) but I didn’t feel like I learned anything new about them or that they evolved in any way.

I absolutely adore this book. John and Carole really managed to bring the characters to life again. Especially Jack whom the story concentrates on the most. I especially LOVE the first half of the book and the beginnings in Peru. It’s so beautifully written, I can’t get it out of my head. When he later on meets up with Gwen and Rhys, I had tears in my eyes to see them together again. I just wish the book had been a bit longer because the ending felt very rushed and I am still not sure if I understood the ending. But since the rest was really well done, I don’t mind it that much.
